Madonna's spokesperson Liz Rosenburg has confirmed that the singer and her director husband, Guy Ritchie are to divorce. In a joint statement released on behalf of the couple she said;
"Madonna and Guy Ritchie have agreed to divorce after seven-and a half- years of marriage, their representatives confirmed today. They have both requested that the media maintain respect for the family at this difficult time."
Rumours of the breakup have been going around for awhile now with sources claiming that Madonna wanted to wait til the end of her Sticky and Sweet tour in November before making any announcements. That date has apparantley been bought forward to finalise the divorce before Christmas.
Gordon Smart, The Sun newspaper's showbiz editor told Sky News that the couple have been trying for months to make the marrigae work but they have had so many arguments, particularly over the last few weeks, that it has come to the stage where they have decided to finish with the pretence.
It is thought that the divorce will not get nasty as the one between Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills did. Their wedding was a private affair and not covered in magazines like OK or Hello.
When the couple married in 2000 they are thought to have signed a pre-nuptial agreement and legal expers predict that Ritchoe could could walk away with up to £50 million.
